Key Aims

The Music Technicians’ Union will represent the interests of workers in technical roles in the UK recorded music industry.

Standing together with colleagues and friends will help standardise working conditions for all, giving everyone a stronger voice together to help improve working conditions, pay, and create a more equal and inclusive working environment.

The MTU will be led by its members, so join the discussion on Discord, follow @musictechniciansunion on Instagram, and register your interest.

We aim to establish:

  • A Minimum Rate Card (a reference for minimum per-hour and per-day rates, according to role and project budget, with additional minimum fees for equipment rental). As an example, see the current BECTU Production Sound rate card
  • Standardised working hours and breaks
  • Minimum time off between working days, with breaches (“overnight infringement”) incurring additional fees for freelancers, or days-off in lieu for contracted workers
  • Guaranteed minimum rates of overtime pay
  • Special rates of pay for bank holidays
  • An enforced system to credit all workers for their contributions – runners, assistants, ops, and engineers (think the credits at the end of a movie)
  • Access to union support, legal advice, and training network

* Additional points for discussion (please contribute your thoughts on Discord):

  • Special rates of pay for weekends [Sunday bonus rates (but not Saturdays) are common in theatre. What is the situation in film & tv? Some other industries pay weekends at time-and-a-half]
  • Special rates of pay for planned overnight sessions? [This is also common in theatre, film and tv, enforced by BECTU in those instances]
